Charity did not begin at home.
The promise of a hard-fought, closely-played girls basketball game between Central Lee and Harmony - at the Lady Hawks' gym - was that to some extent.
But any steady flow of the game was lost by Harmony's numerous trips to the free-throw line (refered to in the olden days as the "charity stripe"). The Rockets held off the Lady Hawks 57-52, but 31 of their points came from free throws.
"Obviously the fouls were the difference in the game," Central coach Jerry Ireland said. "We had 32 and they had 15. We've never had 32 fouls called on us and never has there been a difference of 17 fouls."
Also, Central senior inside player Kaitlyn Grossman fouled out for the first time in her career. She scored all nine points in the first half and spent most of the second half on the bench. Grossman picked up her third foul right before halftime, her fourth in the first minute of the third quarter and fouled out with 7:18 left in the contest.
"It really wasn't a normal game."
Harmony attempted 42 free throws to 18 for Central.
"There's nothing you can do about it," Ireland said. "It took us out of our game plan. We couldn't be as aggressive. It changed the picture of the game."
Harmony remains unbeaten in the South Division, and Central drops to 9-2 in the league, 9-4 overall.
Eventually, though, Coach Ireland said there might have been other ways the Lady Hawks could have adjusted to overcome the tightly-called game.
Central led 16-11 after the first quarter but was outscored 21-11 in the second period. Harmony, however, had just three field goals in that second quarter and made 15 of 20 from the line to take a 32-27 halftime lead.
The Rockets led 52-40 early in the fourth quarter but Central scored eight unanswered points to cut the lead to four, 52-48.
Central freshman Taylor Burdette scored with :44 left to make it 54-52. This time, Central had to foul, and Paige Moore made three of four from the line in the final 28 seconds to give the Rockets the victory...

" Central Lee has always gotta find someone to blame. Let's put it on the refs not matter what the sport. Man if it weren't for the refs Central Lee's football program would be #1 for the past 10+years. Wake up parent, refs are HUMAN TOO! If you want the game called so fair, get certified as a ref. But if you ref a Central game you better call it for Central or someone will be writing one of these complaining about you. GROW UP "

" I can't believe how many people complain about how the refs are the reason a game was lost. Just because you lost doesn't mean its the refs fault. They call the game the way they see it. Yeah there are sometimes where they call something outrageous! But, they call the games fair and do NOT blame them! it's rediculous! Harmony won that game fair and square! "
