'Microwave' rally lifts Central Lee boys 67-62
Big rallies usually take time.
But this is the Microwave Generation, and the Central Lee High School boys basketball team apparently didn't want to wait for some last-second heroics.
Last Friday night in a South Division game against Van Buren, Central found itself down 32-18 with four minutes to go in the second quarter.
The halftime score? Van Buren 36, Central 34.
Central Lee then made four steals to start the third quarter - three by Spencer Peterson and one by Jordan Hawk - to give the host Hawks the lead. Central held on to the small lead the rest of the way and won 67-62 at the Hawks' gym.
In that four-steal stretch, Central scored three times and picked up a foul in the fourth.
"Those guys spear-headed the defense," Central coach Clay Vass said.
Meanwhile, Andrew Mathison, and at times Sam Miller, put the clamps on Jordon Hervey, who scored only five points in the second half after netting 17 in the first half. "Andrew and Sam did a a tremendous job of limiting his touches," Coach Vass said.
"It was a big game for us," he said. "Our young guys are starting to learn to play a little defense."
Mathison led with 23 points and 12 rebounds and also blocked a shot. Brad Vogel had 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks and three assists.
Peterson finished eight points, Kyle Krauter seven and Miller six.
